Indeed.com Module Redesign: Accessibility Focused Update
Role
UI designer and UX researcher
Programs Used
Figma, Adobe Photoshop
Project Duration
October 2024
Overview
In this personal project, I designed a UI module update for Indeed.com with a new map feature, offering a visual way for users to explore job opportunities across different regions. This map-based approach aims to provide an additional, intuitive way to search for roles, catering to users who benefit from spatial visualization. By integrating this feature, I focused on making job browsing more accessible, especially for those who prefer or require visual, location-based search options. This project reflects my dedication to enhancing user accessibility through creative, user-centered design solutions.
Takeaways
CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED
Balancing Accessibility and Aesthetics:
One of the primary challenges I faced was balancing visual design elements with accessibility needs. For example, ensuring color contrasts met WCAG 2.1 standards without compromising the look and feel of the site.
Streamlining Navigation:
Simplifying navigation for users with motor disabilities required rethinking how information is organized and accessed. I learned how critical it is to reduce unnecessary clicks and allow users to reach their goals faster.
Scalable Components for All Users:
The design utilized scalable typography and responsive components that adjusted to different screen sizes and assistive technologies. This helped ensure that the module could work across devices and be accessible to users with different needs.
GOING FORWARD
This project taught me the importance of user testing and iteration when designing for accessibility. Ensuring that every feature was inclusive to all users made me think critically about the smallest design choices. Moving forward, I aim to apply these accessibility improvements to future projects while advocating for more inclusive digital products.
